Australia become the first team to win a third consecutive World Cup title as they beat Sri Lanka by 53 runs (Duckworth/Lewis method) in the finals of the 2007 edition at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on Saturday.

Australis won the toss and elected to bat first, Glichrist hit the fastest and biggest ever century in World Cup final. His 15th ODI ton that came of 72 deliveries was 10 balls faster than Clive Lloyd's hundred in the 1975 final against Australia at the Lord's. He also passed Ricky Ponting's 140 not out against India in the 2003 final at Johannesburg and was rightly adjudged the Man of the Match. Glenn McGrath, playing his last game, won the Man of the Tournament award.

In reply, Sri Lanka's chase suffered an early hiccup when they lost Upul Tharanga in just the third over. Nathan Bracken had him caught behind by Adam Gilchrist for six. Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara then put on a 116-run partnership to keep the Lankan chase well on track before the lost their wickets in quick succession. The Lankans never recovered after that.

Sangakkara made 54 from 52 deliveries before he holed out to Ponting off a Brad Hogg delivery in the 20th over. His knock included six fours and one six. Jayasuriya made 63 from 67 balls with nine boundaries.

In the Second Semi Final, Australia beat South Africa in a one sided game. Australia beat South Africa by seven wickets in the second semifinal at St Lucia on Wednesday to make it to their fourth consecutive Cricket World Cup final.

Chasing 150 to win, Australia hit 153 for three wickets in 31.3 overs. Michael Clarke and Andrew Symonds remained unbeaten on 60 and 18, respectively.

Earlier, batting first after winning the toss, the Proteas were bundled out for 149 in 43.5 overs - their lowest total ever in World Cup.

Glenn McGrath wrecked the top order with a three-wicket burst and Shaun Tait took four wickets to demolish the lower order. Only Herschelle Gibbs and Justin Kemp tried to put up a fight in an otherwise one-sided affair. Kemp remained unbeaten on 49.

McGrath was adjudged Man of the Match.

First Semi Final between New Zeeland and Sri lanka

Sri Lanka stormed into the finals of the 2007 Cricket World Cup as they beat New Zealand by 81 runs in the first semifinal at Kingston, Jamaica on Tuesday.

Set a target of 290 to win, New Zealand was bowled out for 208 in 41.4 overs. This is the fifth time that the Kiwis have failed to progress beyond the last four stage.

Muttiah Muralitharan and Sanath Jayasuriya picked up six wickets between them to demolish the Kiwi middle order. The offie finished with match figures of four wickets for 31 runs from eight overs.

Earlier, skipper Mahela Jaywardene scored his maiden World Cup hundred to help his side post 289 for five. It was competitive till the 40th over, but then the Lankans added 102 runs from the last 10 overs with Jayawardene accounting for 70 of them. He remained unbeaten on 115 and was adjudged the Man of the Match.

England beat West Indies in Lara's last match

England played for its coach, West Indies for its captain. In the end the game won.

England gave coach Duncan Fletcher a victorious farewell as they beat West Indies by one wicket in the last Super Eight match at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on Saturday.

The match was also the last international game for West Indies skipper Brian Lara and while he would have liked to ride into the sunset with a win, it was not to be.

England overhauled the victory target of 301 for the loss of nine wickets with one ball to spare. Kevin Pietersen hit his second ton in this World Cup and was adjudged Man of the Match.

Earlier, put in to bat, West Indies had been bowled out for 300 in 49.5 overs.

After a host of one-sided games, the nerve-jangling affair finally showcased what the World Cup had been craving for.

Chris Gayle and Devon Smith got the hosts off to a blazing start putting on 131 runs. Gayle came in to his own for the first time in the tournament smashing 79 runs from 58 deliveries to lead the charge. He hit 10 fours and three sixes.

Devon Smith hit 61 and put on 37 runs with skipper Lara before he was brilliantly caught by Paul Collingwood off a Flintoff delivery.

Lara, playing his last international match, was left stranded by Marlon Samuels and was run out for just 18. Ramnaresh Sarwan followed him to the pavillion for three. He edged a Liam Plunkett delivery to keeper Paul Nixon.

Samuels went on to score an explosive half-century and put on 77 runs with Shivnaraine Chanderpaul. He made 51 from 39 balls with six fours and one six before he holed out to Collingwood off a Michael Vaughan delivery.

Chanderpaul was dimissed by Collingwood for 34. The hosts then lost the last four wickets for just 24 runs in a space of four overs.

Vaughan picked up the wickets of Dwayne Bravo (13) and Jerome Taylor (12), while Daren Powell (0) and Corey Collymore (1) were run out. Denesh Ramdin was not out on 10.

Early in the chase, England lost the wicket of Andrew Strauss. He was caught by Smith off a Collymore delivery for seven. Vaughan, who was long overdue for a good knock, struck a timely fifty. He put on 90 runs with Ravi Bopara from 13 overs.

Bopara was run out for 26. Pietersen joined Vaughan and the duo put on 59 runs before the England skipper was run out for 79. His 68-ball knock included six fours and two sixes.

Paul Collingwood followed him to the pavillion, bowled by Dwayne Bravo for six. The Windies then sent back Flintoff (15) and Dalrymple (1) to turn on the heat.

A see-saw battle ensued with Pietersen and Nixon smashing 80 runs from 10 overs to get England to the brink of victory. Pietersen reached his second hundred in this World Cup with a six off Taylor. The bowler then exacted his revenge as he bowled him with the very next delivery. Pietersen hit 100 off 91 balls with 10 fours and one six.

Taylor then accuonted for Plunkett. He holed out to Bravo in the deep for just two. Nixon continued to resist the Windies. He took 17 runs off Collymore's last over to get England within striking distance of the target. But with just three runs required off five deliveries, Bravo bowled him for 38 to give the Windies a glimmer of hope.

Broad held his nerves and took two runs with just one ball to spare.

It may not have been the perfect send off for Lara, but for a man who played in the truest spirit of the game, it was almost a perfect game to bow out on.

Australia crush rivals New Zealand by 215 runs in their last Super Eight match at Grenada on Friday.

Chasing a mammoth 349 to win, New Zealand was bowled out for just 133 in 25.5 overs. This is New Zealand's biggest ever defeat in one-day internationals.

Only three New Zealand batsmen managed to get to double figures. Peter Fulton was only one to put up a solid resistance. The opener top scored with 62 and was the last man out.

Brad Hogg picked up four wickets for 29 runs from 6.5 overs, while Tait took three and McGrath took one.

Earlier, batting first after winning the toss, Australia posted a huge 348 for six with Matthew Hayden smashing a record-equalling third century in this World Cup. Shane Watson, who made it back to the Aussie lineup after an injury layoff, smashed 65 not out from just 32 balls.

West Indies beat Bangladesh by 99 runs in their Super Eight match at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on Thursday to keep their pride intact.

Chasing 231 to win, Bangladesh could only manage 131 in 43.5 overs. Mushfiqur Rahim top scored with 38 unbeaten runs, while Mashrafe Mortaza scored 37.

Daren Powell took three wickets, while Chris Gayle, Corey Collymore and Dwayne Bravo picked up two wickets each.

Earlier, an unbeaten 91 by Ramnaresh Sarwan helped the hosts post 230 for five after they were pushed on to the back foot with some tight bowling.

He was adjudged Man of the Match.

South Africa crushed England by nine wickets in their Super Eight match at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on Tuesday to seal the last seminfinal berth.

The South African , powered by Andrew Hall's maiden ODI five-wicket haul, bowled out England for 154 runs in 48 overs and then hit 157 for the loss of one wicket with more than 30 overs to spare. Skipper Graeme Smith and Jacques Kallis remained unbeaten on 89 and 17, respectively.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, England were tested on a lively track by the Proteas who bowled a disciplined line. Hall returned match figures of five for 18 from 10 overs to demolish the English. He was adjudged Man of the Match.

Australia notched up their 20th straight World Cup victory as they beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets in their Super Eight match at Grenada on Monday.

Chasing 227 to win, the defending champions hit 232 for three in 42.4 overs. Ricky Ponting and Andrew Symonds remained unbeaten on 66 and 63, respectively.

Earlier, wickets at the top and lower down the order helped Australia restrict Sri Lanka to 226 in 49.4 overs.

Electing to bat after winning the toss, the Lankans lost three quick wickets before skipper Mahela Jaywardene and Chamara Silva put on a huge 140-run partnership to bring about some stability.

But then the Aussie bowlers scripted another collapse. The Lankans lost five wickets for the addition of just 17 runs in a space of six overs.

Malinga Bandara, who replaced a rested Muttiah Muralitharan, along with Farvez Maharoof hit some lusty shots to take their side past the 200-run mark.

Nathan Bracken picked up four wickets for 19 runs from 9.4 overs and was adjudged Man of the Match

In Reply, Hayden and Gilchrist got the Aussies off to a customary strong start putting up an opening stand of 76 runs.

Hayden smashed 41 from 30 deliveries before he was caught by Tilekaratne Dilshan off a Russel Arnold delivery. He hit five fours and two sixes. He put on 76 runs with Adam Gilchrist.

Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke (23) put on 47 runs for the third wicket before the latter was dismissed by Bandara.

Ponting and Symond then put on an unbeaten 106-run partnership from just under 20 overs to maintain their winning streak. Australia have now been unbeaten in 25 World Cup matches.

Electing to bat first after winning the toss, Ireland scored 243 for seven - their highest total in the World Cup.

William Porterfield top scored with 85 for the Irish. Masharafe Mortaza took two wickets, while four Irish batsmen were run out.

In reply, Bangladesh scored 169 in 41.2 overs. Mohammad Ashraful made 35. Boyd Rankin, Dave Langford-Smith, Wiliam McCallan and Trent Johnston took two wickets each.

New Zealand beat South Africa by five wickets in the Super Eight match at Grenada on Saturday to seal their semifinal berth. Chasing 194 to win, the Kiwis hit 196 in 48.2 overs. Scott Styris hit 56, while Stephen Fleming made 50.

Earlier, New Zealand restricted South Africa to 193 for seven. Put in to bat by the Kiwi skipper, South Africa was pushed on to the back foot from the start with some clinical bowling. The spinners too did a commendable job and never allowed the Proteas to get on top in the game. Herschelle Gibbs top scored for the Proteas with 60 runs. Gibbs made a patient 60 from 100 balls with two fours and one six.

For New Zealand, Shane Bond took two wickets and Craig McMillan scalped three.

Ponting’s decision to field first was backed up by a stupendous bowling performance from their frontline bowlers, as they dismissed a spineless Irish batting order for 91 runs in 30 overs.

Kumar Sangakkara hit an unbeaten 69 to steer Sri Lanka to a six-wicket win over New Zealand in their Super Eight match at Grenada on Thursday.

Chasing 220 to win, Sri Lanka hit 222 from 45.1 overs to hand New Zealand their first loss at this World Cup.

Earlier, New Zealand skipper Stephen Fleming won the toss and elected to bat. Scott Styris hit an unbeaten 111 to help them post 219 for seven after Chaminda Vaas and Muttiah Muralitharan troubled them no end at the beginning and then in the middle of the innings.

For Srilanka, Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara then put on 100 runs in 125 balls to build a strong platform for their team. Jayasuriya made 64 before he was caught behind by Brendon McCullum off a Jacob Oram delivery. His 80-ball knock included five fours and one six.

Chasing a mere 144 to win, England were given quite a scare by Bangladesh before eventually hitting 147 for six from 44.5 overs. Paul Collingwood remained unbeaten on 23 from 74 deliveries, while Nixon was 20 not out from 39 balls.

Earlier, England bowlers put on a top class performance to restrict Bangladesh to 143 in 37.2 overs after skipper Michael Vaughan won the toss and elected to field. For Bangladesh, Saqibul Hasan played a patient and defiant knock. He remained unbeaten on 57 and steered his side past the 100-run mark.

South Africa beat West Indies by an identical 67-run margin in their Super Eight match at Grenada on Tuesday.

Propelled by AB de Villier's maiden one-day international hundred, the Proteas had smashed 356 for four after asked to bat first. De Villiers, who made 146, and Jacques Kallis set up the perfect platform for Herschelle Gibbs and Mark Boucher to take their side past the 350-run mark. Boucher hit the third fastest fifty in World Cup history.

In reply, Chasing a mammoth 357 to win, West Indies scored 289 for nine. Chris Gayle and Devon Smith then put on a quickfire 60 runs. Devon Smith was caught by De Villiers off a Nel delivery for 33. In the next over, Gayle was run out for 32. Lara and Dwayne Bravo kept up the scoring putting up a run-a-ball 50-run partnership. Ramnaresh Sarwan hit 92 from 75 balls with 10 fours and a six. New Zealand beat Ireland by a huge 129-run margin in their Super Eight match at Guyana on Monday.

Chasing 264 to win, Ireland was bowled out for 134 in 37.4 overs with Daniel Vettori picking up four wickets for just 23 runs from 8.4 overs. Barring some resistance by the O'Brien brothers none of the other Irish batsmen could face up to the clinical performance by the Kiwi bowlers.

Earlier, New Zealand overcame a mid-innings crisis, to post 263 for eight after skipper Stephen Fleming won the toss and elected to bat. They were bailed out from a tight spot with a timely 70-run partnership between Brendon McCullum and James Franklin for the eighth wicket.

Peter Fulton was adjudged Man of the Match for his 83 at the top of the New Zealand innings.

Skipper Ricky Ponting struck a superb knock of 86 to help Australia score a comfortable seven-wicket victory over arch rivals England in their World Cup Super Eights match at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Sunday.

Ponting's timely knock, which came with the help of 11 fours off 106 balls, put paid to England's hopes of fighting back after they set a modest 248-run target for the defending champions.

The Aussie skipper added 112 for the third wicket with Michael Clarke (55 not out) to take his team to within striking distance of their third consecutive win in the second stage and a full eight points, including two carried over from the preliminary league.

Ponting was run out off a direct throw from Paul Collingwood, but at 201-3, Australia were all set to complete the formalities. Andrew Symonds (28 not out) ensured it was not a close affair as he struck mighty blows early in his innings and took them home with 16 balls to spare.

Australia also had the benefit of a brisk start as the left-handed opening pair of Matthew Hayden (41) and Adam Gilchrist added 57 in 11 overs. Gilchrist was caught at point by Collingwood off Andrew Flintoff while Hayden went a little later, bowled by Collingwood.

But with Ponting and Clarke batting themselves in, the match was always theirs.

Earlier, Kevin Pietersen struck a doughty 104 but England could only manage a modest 247 all out in 49.5 overs. Pietersen's fourth One Day century and his maiden one against their famed opponents kept the innings together after England elected to bat on a good batting pitch.

A couple of early wickets pegged England back but Pietersen's 140-run stand for the third wicket with Ian Bell (77) helped resurrect the team against some probing bowling by the defending champions.

But overall, the batting lacked the firepower and as many as eight of their batsmen failed to get to double-figures.

Pietersen was lucky to get two chances, which have so much become a trademark for him along with the odd edges that get him boundaries. Ponting failed to latch on to a difficult chance at mid-wicket off Andrew Symonds when he was on 50 and then Hayden dropped a sitter at mid-off off Shaun Tait when Pietersen was on 63.

Pietersen was restrained after the departure of Bell, who played an enterprising 90-ball knock during which he did not hesitate to come down the wicket to the seamers. Bell once hit three fours off a Glenn McGrath over and totalled nine boundaries in his 10th ODI half-century.

But the wickets of Collingwood and Andrew Flintoff in quick succession slowed the innings in the middle overs, with Ravi Bopara (21 off 36) failing to repeat the kind of strokeplay he exhibited against Sri Lanka in their last match.

Pietersen holed out to long-off and the lower-order too could not do much as the innings folded up with a delivery to go.

England did not have a very bright start to their innings as their batsmen struggled against the pace of Tait, who had captain Michael Vaughan in knots on more than one occasion and finally dismissed him, played on, for five. Left-hander Andrew Strauss (seven) too went in similar fashion as England were reduced to 24-2 in the sixth over before Bell and Pietersen helped them recover.

Tait, McGrath and Nathan Bracken ended with three scalps each.
England brought in Strauss for Ed Joyce while the Aussies replaced an injured Shane Watson with Brad Hodge.

Australia have a full six points after two matches of the second stage. Their wins have come against the West Indies and Bangladesh while they carried over two points for their league win over South Africa.

England have just two points after two matches of the Super Eight stage. Not carrying over any points because of their loss to New Zealand, the other qualifier from their preliminary group, they have beaten Ireland but lost to Sri Lanka.

South Africa crashed to a 67-run defeat against Bangladesh in their Super Eight match at Guyana on Saturday.

Chasing a victory target of 252, the Proteas were bundled out for 184 in 48.4 overs. The South Africans were tormented by the Bangladesh spinners who picked up as many as six wickets.

Earlier, Bangladesh rode on a fantastic 87 by Mohammad Ashraful to post 251. Andre Nel, who replaced, Andrew Hall in the South Africa lineup picked up five wickets.

Put in to bat, Bangladesh made a solid start putting on an opening stand of 42 runs in 14 overs. Ashraful and Aftab Ahmed put on 76 runs at almost a run-a-ball. Ashraful made 87 from 83 balls with 12 hits to the ropes.

For South Africa, Jacques Kallis and AB de Villiers put on 45 runs for the second wicket before Rasel struck again. Kallis was caught by Tamim Iqbal for 32.

In the first truly classic contest at this World Cup, Sri Lanka held their nerves to defeat England by two runs in their Super Eight match at Antigua on Wednesday.

Chasing 236 to win, England made 233 for eight with Ravi Bopara and Paul Nixon putting up a fantastic rearguard action to take the match down to the wire after England had been reduced to 134 for six after 34 overs.

With three needed off the last ball, Dilhara Fernando bowled the perfect delivery to dismiss Bopara and sink England. He finished with figures of three for 41 from his nine overs.

Bopara, who struck his maiden ODI fifty, was adjudged the Man of the Match.

Earlier in the day, Sajid Mahmood picked up a career best four for 43 and Andrew Flintoff took three wickets to restrict Sri Lanka to 235.

Chasing a target of 160 from 35 overs, the Proteas scored 165 in 31.3 overs. Jacques Kallis remained unbeaten on 66 and Ashwell Prince made 47 not out. The two put on an unbeaten partnership of 80 runs.

Earlier, put in to bat, Ireland made 152 for eight. The match saw an over two-hour rain stoppage, following which it was reduced to a 35-over-a-side game. The winning target was revised according to the Duckworth/Lewis method.

Fleming leads Kiwis to 9-wicket win

Stephen Fleming hit an unbeaten hundred to lead New Zealand to a nine-wicket win over Bangladesh in their Super Eight match at Antigua on Monday.

Chasing 175 to win, the Kiwis scored 178 in just 29.2 overs. Fleming remained unbeaten on 102. He put on 134 runs with Hamish Marshall, who made 50 not out.

Earlier, Bangladesh was bowled out for 174 runs in 48.3 overs. For Bangladesh, Mohammad Rafique top scored with an unbeaten 30. He also put up 34 runs for the last wicket with Sayed Rasel to take his side past the 150-run mark.

Sanath Jayasuriya hit his third World Cup hundred and took three wickets to help Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 113 runs in their Super Eights match at Guyana on Sunday.

Chasing an imposing 304 to win, West Indies was bowled out for 190 runs in 44.3 overs with only Shivnaraine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan putting up some resistance for the hosts.
Jayasuriya was adjudged the Man of the Match

The hosts have been comprehensively beaten in all three matches they have played in this round. They went down to Australia by 103 runs and then lost to New Zealand by seven wickets and a semifinal spot seems difficult to achieve from here on.

Put in to bat after an hour-long rain delay, Sri Lanka rode on Jayasuriya's ton and a 183-run partnership of his with skipper Mahela Jayawardene to post 303 for five.

Lasith Malinga took four wickets off four deliveries before Robin Peterson held his nerves to take South Africa to a one-wicket win over Sri Lanka at Guyana on Wednesday.

Chasing 210 for a win, South Africa was coasting at 206 for six when Malinga strode out into the middle. He dismissed Shaun Pollock and Andrew Hall off successive deliveries and came back in his next over to scalp Jaques kallis and Makhaya Ntini.

It seemed for a moment that the Proteas would choke yet again, especially with Chaminda Vaas supporting Malinga from the other end.

Peterson finally got a lucky edge off Malinga and the South African dressing room heaved a sigh of relief.

Malinga finished with the match figures of four for 54 from 9.2 overs, but missed out on the Man of the Match award to Charl Langeveldt, who picked up five wickets.

Kallis who played the sheet anchor failed to see his team through as he was dismissed for 86 runs.

Earlier, Chaminda Vaas uprooted AB de Villiers for a duck in the first over of the innings to give Sri Lanka a perfect launchpad for further assault. Smith and Kallis then led the South African revival with a 94-run partnership for the second wicket to steady the innings after the early departure of de Villiers. Smith cracked a brilliant half-century, his fourth in a row, to take his side to a comfortable position before falling to Muralitharan for 59 runs which came off 65 deliveries and included seven boundaries and one six. Muralitharan beguiled Smith into a drive and sanagakkara effected a brilliant peice of stumping to get rid of the dangerous looking South African skipper. Kallis was then joined by Gibbs at the crease and the duo went on the score 65 runs for the third wicket before Mauralitharan struck again to dismiss Gibbs whom he caught off his own bowling for 31 runs.

Charl Langeveldt, who notched a five-wicket haul triggered a middle order collapse to restrict Sri Lanka to 209 in 49.3 overs after skipper Mahela Jayawardene elected to bat.

The sixth-wicket pair of Dilshan and Arnold then stemmed the rot. Dilshan went on to hit his first World Cup fifty as the duo lead the Lankan fightback. He went on to make 58 runs off 76 deliveries - which consisted of four hits to the fence - before falling to Ntini.

The Australian juggernaut continued to steamroll their opposition as they beat West Indies by 103 runs in the first Super Eight match at Antigua on Wednesday.

Chasing 323 to win, West Indies was bowled out for 219 in 45.3 overs. The match that started on Tuesday was postponed till Wednesday due to rain.

Put in to bat on Tuesday, the Aussies riding on an imperious 158 from Mathew Hayden posted 322 for six from their 50 overs. After that the rain gods took over.

This was Hayden's second successive ton as well as Man of the Match award in this World Cup. His knock also helped the defending champions cross the 300-run mark for the sixth consecutive time - another world record.

Barring a slick 77 from skipper Brian Lara and a well-compiled 52 by Denesh Ramdin, the rest of the West Indies batting failed to provide any resistance.

England cruised into the Super Eights with a seven-wicket win over Kenya in St Lucia as Ed Joyce and Kevin Pietersen made light work of the run chase through a stand of 103. Joyce struck his second half-century of the World Cup while Pietersen enjoyed an extended net against the gentle Kenyan attack. Steve Tikolo had been the only one to stand up to England's bowlers as the pacemen put in a strong effort.

Baring S Tikolo no other Kenyans could resist much against England bowling line up. Englanad chased easily and won the match.

Australia beat South Africa by 83 runs in their final league match to top Group A at St Kitts on Saturday.

Chasing 378, South Africa was bowled out for 294 in 48 overs. Austrlia carry forward two points from this match in to the Super Eights round.

Australia started attacking cricket. Matthew Hayden blasted the fastest World Cup hundred as Australia posted an imposing 377 for six - the highest ever achieved by the defending champions and the third highest total in any World Cup. He was adjugded the Man of the Match.

Hayden and Adam Gilchrist gave a blasting start to Australia. They started attacking the South African bowling line up. Specillt Pollack was their target. Shaun Pollock ended up with figures of 83 runs from his 10 overs with no wicket.

Gilchrist was the first to go, who made 42. Hayden went on to score the fastest World Cup ton- off 66 deliveries. He made 101 from 68 balls and hit 14 boundaries and four sixes. Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke continued to built on the skyscraper, putting on 161 runs in the next 22 overs. Ponting hit eight fours and two sixes en route to his 91. Clarke followed him soon after - run out for 92 with seven boundaries and four sixes.

For south Africa, Graeme Smith and AB de Villiers started the chase at a frenetic pace. They put on 160 runs for the first wicket in 20 overs before De Villiers was run out by Watson for 92. De Villiers's 70-ball knock inlcuded 14 fours and two sixes. Smith suffered a round of cramps and was retired hurt for 72. Kallis also made some efforts. He made 48. Sri Lanka beat India by 69 runs in their last Group B match at Trinidad on Friday and India is now almost our of the World Cup!

Chasing 255 and a place in the Super Eights, India was bowled out for 185 runs in 43.3 overs. Earlier, Sri Lanka was put in to bat and they posted 254 for six in their 50 overs. Opener Upul Tharanga hit a fine fifty and put on 41 runs with Chamara Silva before he was trapped leg before wicket by Sachin Tendulkar. He made 64. Silva made fine 59 runs.

Giant killers Bangladesh registered a famous five-wicket win over India in a Group B match at Port of Spain, Trinidad on Saturday. In a David slay Goliath affair, the Bangladeshis –chasing 192 to win – made 195 for five in 48.3 overs and won the match.

India decided to bat first and made only 192. For India, only Sourav Ganguly stood tall amongst the ruins as he brought up his 65th ODI fifty, though in vain. Both Robin Uthappa (9 runs) and M S Dhoni (0) made a forgettable World Cup debut, while another debutante Munaf Patel scored 15 runs and took two wickets. Except Ganguly, Yuvraj Singh made some resistance and made 47 run on the scoreboard. No other batsman made any effort to stay and make runs.

Bangladesh started the chase on a positive note and even though they lost a wicket with just 24 runs on the board, their batsmen did not panic. They played brilliantly in this game in all the departments. Rahim, who remained unbeaten on 56 (4x4, 2x6) brought up the winning run in the company of Mohammad Ashraful (8 not out). Hasan (53, 5x4, 1x6) and played very good and the way Bangladesh has trashed India, it could be a warning to other teams.

Hosts West Indies made a winning start in the 2007 Cricket World Cup beating Pakistan by 54 runs in the opener at Sabina Park, Jamaica on Tuesday. Chasing 242 to win, Pakistan were bundled out for 187 runs in 47.2 overs. Dwayne Smith and Dwayne Bravo were the pick of the West Indian bowlers, taking three wickets each. Australia announces 30 probables for World Cup

After making a clean sweep in the Ashesh with 5-0 one sided win, Australian Board today announces names of the 30 probables playesr for the forthcoming World Cup tournament to be held in the West Indies in March-April, 2007. The names of the players are as follows:

Indian World Cup probables on 12th

The names of the 30 probable Indian cricket players for the World Cup Cricket tournament to be held in West Indies in the months of March-April will be anounced on 12th January in Rajkot, Gujrat. World Cup will start from 11th march 2007. According to the deadline of the ICC, the names of the 30 probables has to be sent till 13th January. The final 14 member team will be announced one month before the starting of the tournament.

Fletcher to decide for future beyond World Cup

England coach Duncan Fletcher has defended his side's Ashes preparation and said he - and not the England management could decide his future beyond next year's World Cup.

Despite losing the first three Tests, Fletcher backed his side's controversial build-up to the tour, and once again stood by England's selections, notably making Andrew Flintoff captain and overlooking Monty Panesar.

Fletcher is under pressure to retain his position beyond the World Cup in 2007, and said he would spend the next six month deciding if he wanted to extend his seven-year tenure. "I'll just make my up my mind" he said "I might move in six months"

Shoaib and Asif will play world Cup

Pakistani fast bowlers Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif on tuesdays won thier appeals against the bans they faced on doping charges.

A three-member appeals tribunal, appointed by PCB accepted the cricketer's defence that they did not have sufficient warning that the supplements they were taking could contain steroids.

The decision means Akhtar and Asif are likely to play in the 2007 World Cup in the Carrbbean.

Former Indian team physio Andrew Leipus feels that Yuvraj Singh's chances of getting fit for the world cup are 'touch and go'. The dashing ieft-hander batsman has been included in the ODI squad for the tour of South Africa subject to fitness.

Yuvraj has suffered a tear in the interior cruciate ligament, with some amount of bruising of the bone in the left knee along with swelling, during training on the eve of India's crucial league encounter against Australia in the Champion's Trophy.

"I hav'nt seen him, but a reptured ligament in the knee has to be re-constructed and it normally take 5-6 months for such an injury to heal completely" Leipus told on Tuesday.

BCCI's chief administrative officer, Ratnakar Shetty said on tuesday that Yuvraj's fitness would be assessed as scheduled on Novemebr 10.

Port-of-Spain: Tickets bought for next year's cricket World Cup on Internet auction sites or from other third party outlets will not be honoured, the organisers said on Thursday. World Cup officials are working with eBay and internet monitoring services to identify who is selling tickets. Those posted on eBay were drawing bids of more than twice their value. a package of four tickets for matches with a face value of $900, had attracted bids higher than $1,900. Price said organisers started noticing unauthorised sales in late August.

India to play bilateral series before WC

The final tune-up for the Indian squad before the March-April World cup would be done through two bilateral series against the West Indies and Sri Lanka in January and February next year. "The two bilateral series would in all probability be held over best-of-four ties each. The details would be held finalised during the Dubai meeting of the ICC Chief Executives Committee on September 24 and 25" BCCI Secretary Niranjan shah said.

Shah said that the series against the West Indies would be held first and it would be followed by the one against the Emerald Islanders. " The India - Windies series has been fixed between January 18 and 30, 2007. while the one against the Lankans would be held between February 7 and 18" he said.

India not to attend Manager's Meeting

The Indian Cricket Controll Board (BCCI) will not attnd the meeting of the 16 participating teams at the 2007 World Cup, called by the organisers in Barbados on thursday and Friday (21/09/06 and 22/09/06). Niranjan Shah, Secretary, said the Indian team manager would be appointed only after the Board's annual general meeting in Mumbai from September 27-28.

"No one from the BCCI is attending because there is a lot of time left for Worl Cup" Shah said "We will appoint manager only after th AGM. We are not going to lose out any anything by not attending the meeting" he added.

Representatives of the 16 participating nations will attend the meeting, hosted by the Cricket Operations Department of the World Cup West Indies 2007 Inc. Senior officials from the IC and World Cup headquarters as well as cricket operations managers from nine local organising committees of the host islands will also be attending.

Shah added that the BCCI would send the manager separately once an appointment is made. " We will send our manaager to the West Indies in January. They (organisers) will tell him the same thing" he said.

ICC launches 2007 World Cup logo, mascot in India

NEW DELHI, July 27: The International Cricket Council officially launched the 2007 cricket World Cup logo, mascot and tournament schedule in India on Thursday.

The function included a stage presentation where the World Cup trophy was also unveiled. A delegation of the Caribbean, led by Prime Minister of Grenada Keith Mitchell, attended the function. The aim of the programme was to urge the fans in India to visit the Caribbean and enjoy the cricketing extravaganza in a carnival like atmosphere.

ICC CEO Malcom Speed said West Indies were long overdue to host the World Cup given their immense contribution to the game. "Given the passion West Indies have for the game and the tremendous commitment shown so far by the governments and people of the region, we are confident that they will host an excellent cricket World Cup," Speed said.

Managing Director and CEO of ICC World Cup 2007, Chrish Dehring, said India was an extremely important market in multiple respect, as incumbent host to the next World Cup, as home to the largest TV audience to world sport and as the base for the tournament for the official global partner and two of the official sponsors.

"To show our commitment to strengthening our relationship with India, we are working to highlight the World Cup in India and offer a taste of what fans can expect in the Caribbean," Dehring said.

"We want to make sure that the Indian public is fully informed and excited about the event. We also wish to encourage as many Indian fans as possible to travel to the Caribbean for the best cricket World Cup ever," Dehring said.

Ganguly still cherishing World Cup dream

Despite a disappointing stint in English county cricket so far, Sourav Ganguly has not given up hope of playing for India in next year's World Cup in the Caribbean.
"Well, if I thought it would not be possible (playing in the World Cup), I would not have been playing now. That is a dream for me and I am chasing it. I need runs to back myself and if I can do so, it will be okay," Ganguly said.
The former captain, who is playing for Northamptonshire, believed that he could return to the national side if he had his performance to back him.
"Well, that is something I believe I should. That is the reason why I am here at the County cricket. I know I have to perform to come back to the team and I am trying to do so," he was quoted as saying by Gulf News.
Ganguly, who was injured in Northants' warm-up game against Pakistan XI and has been advised a two-week rest, however, admitted he was not impressive enough for the county.
"Yes, in England and at this time of the season, you need to survive the initial moments to go for a big score. I was not getting the start in the last few matches. But I have to make it big to be there," he said.
